I hope they make a trip to the states soon... I'd love to see them again!

Re: ADHD | Riverside

Just in case you were wondering how the new album works on the concerts: it rocks :)). I have seen them live yesterday and they actually played the whole new album (from the first to the last song) and it sounded really great. Some parts are even better live than on a record.

Re: ADHD | Riverside

I've just listened to the piece once again, and indeed, what you wrote about bass and rythm is true. But if listener's focus is, like mine, usually concetrated on lead guitar (or, more general, melody) then, what band members themselves called 'quotation from Shine On Your Crazy Diamond' really stands out from the rest of the piece. It's different: the melody, the sounds of guitars and keyboard, all that changes. (although I admit, listener not knowing original song wouldn't notice anything unusual) Furthermore a reader of the review, who is new to Riverside, could be under false impression the 'Back to the River' is a 'full blown cover". Therefore, even though the inspiration is unquestionable, my 'cover is saying a bit too much' statement.

Long story short: I agree with the last sentence of your post. Peace :-)

Re: ADHD | Riverside

Agreed, I'll have to get a hold of the DVD for sure!

As far as the Back to the River being a cover or not... I'd have to disagree with you there. Only a short part was EXPLICITLY taken from Shine On You Crazy Diamond. I'll agree it's not a full blown cover, but I remember people around me when I saw this performed live and multiple people asked (including one guy to me) if they were playing Pink Floyd even before the guitar solo kicked it. Certain pieces of the song are explicitly taken from Shine On You Crazy Diamond while other parts are perhaps just largely influenced by the track (or maybe Pink Floyd in general). The bass line of Back to River leading up until the Shine On You Crazy Diamond guitar part comes in is very similar to the the bass line in other parts of Shine On You Crazy Diamond... definitely in the beat and rhythm, though slightly varied melodically. Furthermore, the sonic atmosphere on Back to the River is very different than anything else they had done up until then and is very reminiscent of Pink Floyd.

I'll agree it's not a direct cover. More like a cover with artist license, and I mean that respectfully. This is similar to The Bad Plus covering Rush's Tom Sawyer or Estradasphere covering the theme song to Super Mario Bros. 2 in the spirit of a big band (which is fantastic I must say).

Long story short, I'll compromise and say Back to the River is largely inspired by Shine On You Crazy Diamond and an overall tribute to Pink Floyd. Deal? :-)

Re: ADHD | Riverside

While Second Life Syndrome remains my favourite Riverside album, ADHD is great too. Period :-) And I really recommend CD+DVD edition if you can get your hands on it. DVD really gives you some taste on how the bands sounds live (which is: awesome).

BTW: Calling 'Back to the River' a Pink Floyd's cover is a bit too much. Most of it was composed by Riverside, only short part is taken from 'Shine...'

Re: ADHD | Riverside

Very nice review, I dig the keyboards as well.

Re: ADHD | Riverside

Yeah, they've been rather vague about it. As soon as it's available here, I'm getting my hands on a copy. Now that I've heard the only of the album, I'm even more excited about owning it. This has already become my favorite of their albums.

Re: ADHD | Riverside

Yeah man! I'd love to see these guys again. It sounds like you probably already have the other albums, but if you haven't already, listen to the whole Reality Dream Trilogy sequentially.

Re: ADHD | Riverside

I checked out "Rapid Eye Movement" after reading about it on this site, and loved it. I already pre-ordered my copy of ADHD with the bonus DVD. I'm hoping these guys do a proper tour of the US soon.

Re: ADHD | Riverside

heh, I was actually back in Riverside two weeks ago and I introduced a girl to the band Riverside, and she asked if they were from Riverside, CA and I was like no... they're from Poland.

wow, I think I just confused myself trying to explain that

Re: ADHD | Riverside

I recall he talked more about the theme of ADHD in the interview as well... something about society always has "big brother" always watching these days. I'll have to peruse that interview again. I'll make another clip if it's substantial.

Does it seem weird liking a band with the same name as your grad school? Or is it weirder having the governator's signature on the diploma?

Re: ADHD | Riverside

Glad to see you keeping up with us! Yeah, the album is great... unfortunately it seems there's been a bit of a delay in the release date. Not sure why though...

Re: ADHD | Riverside

Great review! I've been a fan of Riverside for a while now. I haven't heard anything of ADHD of than the cut on Myspace, but it sounds like Riverside is taking new and refreshing steps in their sound. I can't wait to hear the full album!

Re: ADHD | Riverside

LOVE this album, and yes, the keys definitely play a big part in it... I think that's actually what surprised me the most. I agree this is probably the best album to initiate someone who's never heard of Riverside because of its self-contained, more energetic nature. Also, thanks for posting that video clip - it all makes so much sense now after having digested this album.
