I know Apple's lossless format typically runs around 300Mb per album (depending on the length of the album and degree to which it can be compressed), and flac is in the same neighborhood. So that allows for ~1600 full-length albums with your half-terabyte storage... that's a lot of music. MP3/AAC at the highest bitrate (320kbps) take up less than half the space of flac, so you have room for even more music with 350Gb of those formats.

Re: Audio Compression

Nice.

Re: Audio Compression

I am running a Slim Devices Squeezebox and using my old desktop computer for the server. Both run wireless on my house network. I rip all my music as flac using Exact Audio Copy (EAC). EAC is a complex ripper, but there is great help for configuring it to the best possible combination. I prefer flac over mp3. But also rip mp3s for my car stereo and mp3 player. So I have a 350 g for mp3s and a 500 g for the flac files.

Re: Audio Compression

No, I'm re-ripping my CD's to FLAC. That's pretty impressive.

Good point that the loudness war is not exactly the same thing as compression for storage purposes... I was wondering if someone would call me on that. It's in the same neighborhood though and can have some similar effects.

Re: Audio Compression

Completely agree. I was going to post a rant about buying music from iTunes or other online music stores, and why I'll never do it, but you pretty much covered everything in the "iTunes, shmiTunes" article.

I used to store all my music in MP3 format, but within the past 6 months I've started moving away from that and using FLAC instead. Almost have 150 albums in FLAC already. Unfortunately I think it's gonna be a while before the portable media players and car stereos catch up though. Ideally I'd like 500 GB in my pocket and a terabyte in my car. Even with today's technology it shouldn't be that difficult. But most people are content with MP3's so there's not much demand for devices with that much storage.

Also, regarding the Death Magnetic thing, this video lets you listen to the CD and Guitar Hero versions side-by-side if you're interested:

Although, what happened with Death Magnetic was the "loudness war", which is not the same as CD vs. MP3 compression. But it is a good example of some kind of compression messing up the music. More info on the loudness war:
