The 2nd song in the preview doesn't seem to be Blackwater Park. I looked up Blackwater Park on youtube to hear the whole thing and it didn't sound like what was on here. What song is that 2nd one?

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

I'll have to check those guys out. Mike actually wrote a review of
Cynic not long ago, even got to see them recently.

Thanks!

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

Agalloch. I don't personally think they sound like Opeth (though that has been said by many), but they do have a similar heavy metal/acoustic passage/heavy metal/acoustic passage dynamic going on within their songs. Agalloch is influenced by black metal more than death metal, as opposed to Opeth, which reflects in the style of the guitarplaying, as well as the vocals, the former of which is only similar to Opeth's first couple albums, and the latter of which is completely unlike Mikael's in both growled and clean styles. They also make much more use of reverb, which, combined with the distinctly melancholy sound of their music, makes them come across very wintry.

If you don't mind the black metal sound, I also recommend Enslaved. Progressive black metal, good production, not too over the top. I believe they toured with Opeth recently, so you may already be familiar with them.

Gwynbleidd: Their sound is very similar to Opeth's MAYH/SL sound. I'm not as much of a fan of these guys, though they play very well. The heavier, metal sections are a little disappointing, especially compared to Opeth's riffage, but in the clean, more mello passages, Gwynbleidd really ups the ante. (think Damnation) It's hard not to be dismissive towards this band, since they sound so much like Opeth, but don't really manage to ever top them, but again, they play really well. I believe there is alot of potential here. I'm keeping my eye on them. Plus, I can't complain about having what could be an Opeth album in a year where Opeth isn't going to release a new observation.

One word. Cynic. If you haven't checked them out already, what are you waiting for??

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

Good point... I didn't notice that until about a month ago. I shot an email to my dad and he was just as surprised as me. I actually didn't even realize until then that Steven Wilson produced Blackwater Park too... explains a lot actually. It never occurred to me because I had seen them live and didn't think anything of it.

Given that they're a favorite of yours, might you have some suggestions of bands similar to Opeth?

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

Hi there -- nice article; Opeth is a favorite. I just want to point out that the soft singing that you hear the in first sample (Bleak) isn't actually by Mikael. It's sung by Steve Wilson from PTree. Mikael does it himself when he sings live and it's pretty sick, but that's probably why the two voices are so "staggeringly different." Not to say that Mikael can't sing clean vocals, because he really can and it's gorgeous.

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

nah, no silly bits, but I liked when he thanked us all for coming out; he said something like, "you know, we don't have fancy pyrotechnics, we don't dress up in costumes, we don't jerk off on stage or anything like that... we're just five ugly guys up here playing music"

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

Glad you finally got to see them. Mikael definitely knows how to keep the crowd's attention. Did he do the bit juxtaposing his drummer to Lars?

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

Hah - I love it. There is nothing wrong with man-crush's as long as you know you're sexual orientation. Atleast that is what I keep telling myself!

Would have loved to see Opeth. I think I'm the only one left who hasn't seen them live. It's on my goal's list now.

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

I was finally able to see Opeth in concert last night and although my expectations were extremely high, they were still exceeded. What was once just a suspicion is now fact: I have a full-blown man-crush on Mikael. Don't get me wrong, it's strictly platonic... but I'm not ashamed to say that if I was a woman I'd totally want to do him.

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

Well not every reader... just the ones that had to ease in to Opeth with Damnation. But yeah... I like it too. I was trying to simulate the impact of Blackwater Park in your face.

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

BTW, I like how you throw your reader and Metallica under the bus in same sentence.

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

I never gave Meshuggah much of a chance, but they are definitely a unique band... almost strictly for the fact it's very, very hard to replicate what they're playing. Dimmu Borgir is definitely good, but I'm not sure they have the compositional skill of Mikael from Opeth. They sound a little too over the top in the black death metal realm... but maybe I just need more listens. It took me a while to get into Opeth, so I'll have to give these guys some more time before I can give a well-informed opinion.

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

For new metal, don't forget the new Meshuggah or Skeletonwitch! Opeth is good, but , try Dimmu Borgir! (IMHO they is better...)

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

The newest album is so good. I can't stop listening to it!

I so have to go back and listen to the older albums. Also have to find out when they're coming back to the east coast.

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

I didn't get into Opeth until after Scott got me listening to Mudvayne and Nothingface... I think it was shortly after that concert you mentioned, I remember you guys going to it.

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

Great article. I love Opeth. I got into them because of Porcupine Tree. I've seen them three times just on the Ghost Reveries tour and they are just amazing live.

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

First of all... between me and Scott, how did you not already know that?! I wish I had known you'd like them so you could have gone with me, Scott, Christiana, and Mr. Cutright on Halloween senior year at the TLA. Dude, South Street in Philly on Halloween at a death metal concert... need I say more?

Watershed is more like Ghost Reveries than the others in the sense that its a little more accessible and has less "pure, black metal non-sense" screaming. If you can tolerate more screaming than what's on Ghost Reveries, Blackwater Park is my suggestion, my first exposure to Opeth, and probably my favorite album by them. It's heavier and a little more... shall I say, epic? Every album has incredible guitar work and drumming and the classical guitar arrangements are impeccable. Ghost Reveries is probably the most accessible album they did that was heavy. Damnation was the most accessible, but completely mello rock... although it was also very, very good.

I'd say go with Blackwater Park. Even if you can't handle the vocals, I know you'll appreciate the music. If you happen to like it, then you've got about 7 more albums to go!

Re: Death Metal with Talent | Opeth

How do the albums you mention above compare to Ghost Reveries? That album rocks my socks.
