yeah man, Existence is one of those albums that actually makes me look forward to driving in L.A. traffic... seriously. I really like that each of their albums has a distinct sound; not many bands show as much growth and experimentation throughout their first three releases as these guys have. The reference to Riverside was inserted more for the structure of their songs than their sound.

This is a great find Mike! I purchased all three albums right after I read your review. I really like them all, but Existence their best for sure. I hear more Opeth and Dead Soul Tribe than Riverside... although the guitar and drum work isn't quite as elaborate as Opeth. The first album reminds of me of Opeth's Damnation with some growling sprinkled throughout. And the singer reminds me of Geoff Tate from Queensryche at times... not a bad thing.

yeah, like I said the first one is pretty good, but it's in a doom/death metal style and isn't especially unique in my opinion... and I don't think you'd really like it. With this album though they go in a substantially different direction and they do a good job of defining their own sound. They continue that with their '08 release, and although it's not as epic as this one there's still a lot of really cool stuff going on there.

After you said this was a mashup of Riverside + Dead Soul Tribe, I was very interested. Then when you said Opeth's mellow stuff - I was hooked. I am the biggest fan of Opeth mellow - not so much the harder screaming stuff.

I look forward to buying their latest two albums. Dan said the first is a little more screaming, true?
