I see I was quite mistaken.

Re: Ki - Devin Townsend

I'm not that familiar with Devin Townsend's music either, but I know he used to have an awesome "skullet":

http://www.spirit-of-metal....
http://img402.imageshack.us...
http://wpcontent.answers.co...

Re: Ki - Devin Townsend

I'd have mentioned Townsend and his projects to you a long time ago if I'd known you weren't aware of him. I've been spinning this album since it came out and I concur with you 100% on how great it is. You are correct in saying this a departure from his usual styles, but the biggest departure I've noticed on this album is that it lacks the 'wall of sound' production that Townsend has earned so much praise for, so the music sounds much freer, though it doesn't have that oceanic depth of sound that most of his albums display. I must say he uses lack of compression as well as he does compression.

A very cool interview with Devin explaining the motivations and concepts behind Ki and the albums following it in the Devin Townsend Project:
http://www.toazted.com/inte...

The Townsend albums I recommend if you really want to explore his music and styles:
Ocean Machine: Biomech - Devin Townsend
Synchestra - Devin Townsend Band
City - Strapping Young Lad
Ziltoid the Omniscient - Devin Townsend
The Hummer - Devin Townsend
Cooked on Phonics - Punky Bruster (Devin Townsend as a fake punk rock band)
