Thanks for the feedback!

Re: Liquid Tension Experiment

Technically, the Trio album was recorded during the sessions for the second album. When Petrucci left because his wife went in labor, the other three just jammed in the remaining studio time. So the album itself is just now getting released, but it was recorded almost 10 years ago. Just a little fact-check there, but a good review, I enjoyed it and if I wasn't obsessed with the band already, I'd definitely want to check them out after reading this article. 8/10.

P.S. King Crimson rule. ;P

Re: Liquid Tension Experiment

Yeah, I can't argue with you there. I think I more or less appreciate the idea of LTE more than the albums themselves. Don't get me wrong, I like the albums... but I don't listen to them regularly.

Re: Liquid Tension Experiment

Good job with this article, but in parts it DID seem a bit weak and non evocative. But you did cover a lot of key facts about the band. 7/10

Re: Liquid Tension Experiment

Are you really suggesting there is really only one band that has been improvising for the past 39 years? And what about the 17 years in there that King Crimson wasn't playing or making music?

It seems you've also missed the point entirely. LTE was about on the spot composition in the studio. This is not improvising. The compositions created were based on improvisations and spur of the moment ideas. LTE provides a more developed and refined product than straight improvisation, which is up for interpretation as to whether or not that is better. Some people prefer improv, some people prefer very finely tuned compositions. LTE decided to go for something somewhere in the middle. No, they're not the first band to do what they did. But the vast majority of bands will know exactly what they're playing before they get to the studio. LTE just happened to do a great job with a concept that is rarely used.

I certainly respect your opinion of King Crimson. They're definitely one of the better bands out there and have been a huge influence for countless musicians (including myself). But King Crimson and LTE are two very different projects. I'd also say "Awe-inspiring" and "Virtuosic" is good enough to make a band worthy of getting some props.

Re: Liquid Tension Experiment

Puhleeze,

It's too bad that most Dream Theater and LTE fans have never heard of King Crimson. The supposed "on the spot" and "improvised" music that LTE does is nothing new.

Awe-inspiring? Virtuosic? Sure.

But there is one band that has been improvising and making music on the spot for the past 39 years.

That band is King Crimson.

Doing essentially the same as what LTE did to make their albums, except doing it EVERY NIGHT of their tours (especially back in the 70's).

Except that King Crimson's DAILY improvs had soul. The only soul in LTE is Tony Levin.

Re: Liquid Tension Experiment

Absolutely. I had only heard that from wikipedia, which is why I didn't post it... then again, I didn't really bother to verify it elsewhere either.

Re: Liquid Tension Experiment

For you info the other "obligations" that Petrucci had to attend to was his wife going into premature labor. I think that is acceptable, at least in my book.

Re: Liquid Tension Experiment

Agreed... i kind of forgot about them too until Mr. Cutright suggested they'd be a good post for the site.

Re: Liquid Tension Experiment

Yes... these guys f'in rock.
