All you have to do is type in a genre e.g. 'Progressive Metal' and then click on the 'List of Progressive Metal bands' link. After that just pick and choose which bands you like the name of and take it from there. Seriously I have discovered so many bands this way.

Happy hunting

Re: Maybe Music Isn’t Dead…

Yeah, I can't blame the sense that music is dead on the changes in radio entirely for sure... But what I can say with certainty is that there is a population of musicians and fans of quality music that simply aren't looking for music in an efficient manner for the current time. I happen to think that population is too large and I think we can agree the introduction of the internet is definitely a game changer with respect to finding great music. I'd argue anyone that has access to internet and has claimed music is dead... is a slacker!

Re: Maybe Music Isn’t Dead…

Your first paragraph highlights a point I've contemplated myself many times before. I had actually thought about writing an editorial on exactly this (comparing radio circa 1970 to radio circa 2000) but I couldn't decide on a good angle. I don't know if the difference between these two eras is more a result of changes in the commercial music industry specifically, or rather due to broader overall social and cultural changes. Although I suppose the former tends to evolve and adapt precisely because of the latter. Of course there are also developments simply in music itself to consider. For example, comparing music in the 40's to music in the 80's is nonsensical I think; hip-hop and rock ruled the 80's whereas those genres didn't even exist in the 40's.
