I would dare say that the sonic characteristics that a musician chooses to apply to a given piece should be just as thought out as the notes being played. It's a whole synergistic sort of thing. Technique, dynamic, tone, and effects, variation's of the instrument itself (ie single coil or humbucker guitar to the more nuanced choices like types of wood, brand of pick ups, string gauge, action, pick thickness, etc) definitely play a huge role in shaping the artists sound. I've found that a lot of my favorite musicians are very meticulous about all of those little nuances that make their sound.
