My dad is FINALLY getting around to see them live for the first time. Maybe he's just not been feeling well.

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

Boo Hoo!!! Maynard's pipes seem to wear down faster than other people's or they are not meant to be used the way they are for extended periods. On the recent tour, he very often didn't even sing the last few lines of Vicarious.

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

I like most of the singers you listed... I suppose most of the ambiguity in my list is what exactly "strong" means. Everyone has their own definitions.

Passenger is a fantastic song! It's my favorite track on White Pony and one of Maynard's better collaborative efforts... though there aren't nearly enough.

And it's never too late to join in on a discussion here!

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

I just came across this list and looks like I am a month to late to join the discussion. Anytime you create a list like this it’s going to invite criticism from many people.

Maynard for sure is in the right place. His voice is probably the most commanding in rock today. Personally I think the song that really shows just how strong his voice is would be "The Passenger" which he did with the deftones. Listening to him sing the chorus of that song gives me chills.

The rest of the list is debatable.
Layne Staley, Chris Cornell (though personally I hate his voice), Axl Rose, Phil Anselmo, Robert Plant, just to name a few. Really the list is long and hard to distinguish.

Also, this is just a personal favorite list as I said at the top of the post.... I guess I'm just not much a of a Queen fan. That said... Freddie Mercury's voice is definitely very good.

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

oh my God where the hell is freddie mercury????How come you havent included him in this list?

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

I love RATM, and easily more so than Soundgarden, but there's no way Zack has anywhere near the range and versatility of Cornell - no way, no how.

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

I'm also not a big fan of his style because in general I think he could sound more human and exhibit more raw emotion, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a strong voice.

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

anything and everything... am I the only one that isn't sad that he ended his life early?

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

Cornell yes.... but Rossdale? (you can hear that pitch controller doing its job). I don’t think she is bad singer, but hey... there are girls that can rock much better than this (young, old, or dead)! And shame on you ... never mentioned good old Mike Patton!

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

I believe that HM can much stronger vocalists: David Coverdale, Bruce Dickinson, Jeff Scot Soto, Michael Kiske, Tarja Turunen ...

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

baaaaaaaaaaaad list. what are you listening to? timberlake, ice t?

Clearly you're very angry. But Billy White never made the radio, and sadly Jeff Buckley is very, very rarely on the radio. I'd hope you don't disagree with Maynard, but who knows. So really just Scott Weiland and Amy Lee made you this angry?

I'm not sure how I couldn't compare the John Mayer Trio to SRV, if you read the article completely you'd see that I don't much care for John Mayer... but his trio is very different. SRV is a huge influence on John Mayer, and he let's that show in his trio. I've been playing guitar since the year SRV died... I'm pretty sure I know what he sounds like. I'm also not the only one to make this comparison... do some research, it's all over the place.

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

Haha! I love Thom Yorke... but Scott is still a better singer I think. I see Chris Cornell pop up in comments here a lot... he's good, but is he really that good? I don't know. As you can see, I wrote this post in only our second month of operation, and I've come across a lot more music. I'll update this list someday, but is kind of funny how just a couple names can get people so angry.... not you of course.

Thanks for keeping up with our site!

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

I haven't heard of any of them till just now. I wouldn't consider Paramour rock, and Flyleaf does have a good singer but I don't much care for the music. Within Temptation has a really good singer, good choice. Sirenia's singer is good too, but her voice sits in her mouth (rather than her throat) too much for my liking.

Also, my point still stands. There still aren't enough female singers. There are way more male singers... I hope we at least agree on that?

Thanks for the feedback!

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

Sure, I agree with both of you... but why use that as your live recording to distribute?

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

Actually I did write a post about Alter Bridge. We actually had a good discussion on this board about some strong singers from the 70's and 80's, unfortunately disqus lost it when we redesigned our site. I'm not gonna argue with your choices (except maybe Tyler and Roth... sorry, just not my cup of tea).

Re: Strongest Voices in Rock

Thanks for the catch!
