It is gorgeous music, every album since hasn't rung true to this sound for me, I enjoy De-loused and everything that came before it...

and like paul said, they are "structured but loose" it's got the yin-yang thing going on very well, incredibly dynamic... the guy who wrote this article said he got tired of the drones, yes in the newer work they are a bit contrived, in de-loused however, they got it just right... it's chaotic, gritty, metallic, but also smooth warm and living. it is "organismal"

Re: The Mars Volta

I bought the Mars Volta live album after hearing it in a shop. It caught me off balance. There was something enticingly strange about it - metallic but not metal, structured but loose. I got it home and played it a couple of times with the same feeling and then suddenly everything just fell into place and it sounded like dreary and pretentious old prog that I didn't need to hear any more and I wondered what I was ever thinking of.

Re: The Mars Volta

I got into The Mars Volta after I saw them live in support of A Perfect Circle so I bought Deloused in the Comatorium and fell in love. Unfortunately I haven't enjoyed their following 3 albums all that much other than the song The Widow on Frances the Mute. I guess they just went too experimental for me.

My recommendation for any potential TMV fans is to start with Deloused in the Comatorium. It's a concept album dealing with their At The Drive-In band member's suicide and it seems to be more accessible to me than the others.

Re: The Mars Volta

Yes they are... but they definitely had the wrong sound engineer. Way too much going on for him apparently. Does this mean you might like them now?

Re: The Mars Volta

Are these the guys that performed System of a Down?
